With their first bundle of joy well on it’s way, Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson are conjuring up prospective godfathers for their daughter and according to EntertainmentWise.com, John Mayer is the frontrunner.

Let’s not forget that Mayer is Ashlee’s sister Jessica’s ex, which could be awkward!

“Pete and John have been spending a lot of time together lately and they get on so well,” said a source. “They are firm friends. John gets a bad rap and is always portrayed as a bad boy but he’s got a heart of gold. Pete and Ashlee know that and they think he would make a great godparent.”

Maybe so, but the John-Jessica link could be a stumbling block. “But they are holding back asking him at the moment because they are not sure how Ashlee’s sister Jessica would feel about her ex having such a strong link to her new niece.”

I guess we’ll find out in October when the baby is born if Jessica gave her blessing or not!
