Jennifer Love Hewitt and fiance Ross McCall have called it quits.

“They broke up over the holidays and have ended their engagement,” a source close to the couple tells People.com excusively.

“They’re both really sad about this. Even their friends are surprised; they seemed really happy. Everyone just wants the best for both of them.” the source continues.

Hewitt and McCall got engaged in November 2007 and she was quoted saying this about it: “First time I’ve ever been in a relationship where you don’t have to try.”

Well, judging from the outcome maybe Jennifer should have tried a little bit harder.

Reps for both stars had no immediate comment.
